Sound-Powered Telephone System
PDF Print E-mail

Telefonia Ativada por VozThe Sound-Powered Telephone System is a contingency communications network used exclusively in emergency situations. It operates without any external electrical power source.

The system is normally used the ship’s main communications networks has failed due to a power outage. It is also used during maintenance activities.

The Sound-Powered Telephone System infrastructure supports the establishment of simultaneous calls between many types of telephone sets. Voice quality is preserved with up to 10 users in conference.

How it works

he System establishes telephone connections throughout a vessel, based on an infrastructure that runs without the use of batteries or any other type of power supply. The system’s microphone transducers can generate electrical signals and reproduce them remotely, just using the power from the speaker’s voice.

There are many different sound-powered telephone sets available, including headsets with earphones and microphones (ideal for noisy environments), wall mount terminals and flush mount devices.

Telefonia Ativada por VozThe main system components are:

  • Telephone sets of diverse models:
    • Headset with push to talk (PTT) button
    • Wall mount telephone sets
    • Flush mount telephone sets (built into the wall)
  • Cabling infrastructure:
    • Telephone distribution boxes
    • Telephone junction boxes
    • Terminal blocks

If required, it is possible to incorporate hand-operated generators to the system.

Scope of a Standard Project

C.FOSTER supplies and installs Sound-Powered Telephone Systems in ships and platforms of varying sizes, meeting the highest quality standards required for this type of installation.

C.FOSTER relys on a highly skilled and trained technical team, composed of professionals with large experience with maritime and offshore customers, most of whom have been trained abroad at our partner equipment vendor’s facilities.

Equipment and materials are supplied according to international norms and standards, including recommendations from PETROBRAS, ANATEL, IMO/SOLAS, Unit Classification Society, AIS, SSAS, ABS, DNV and others.

All materials and accessories are specified and assembled, considering the hostile environmental characteristics of the offshore production environment. All installed systems are rigorously tested, with test instruments that are regularly calibrated according to applicable norms.

Project and installation activities typically include:

  • System conception according to the needs of each customer
  • Engineering design including plans and descriptive drawings
  • Supply and delivery logistics according to the project schedule
  • On-board Installation and commissioning
  • “As built” documentation, including updated plans and drawings
  • Training programs for customer personnel
